UN: Nearly 10,000 Civilians Slain in Ukraine’s Ongoing Conflict

Humanitarian Aid Urgently Needed in Ukraine, says UN Representative at Security Council Meeting
The United Nations Security Council recently convened to discuss the situation in Ukraine, with a particular focus on the need for humanitarian aid in the country. Ramesh Rajasingham, the Geneva Representative and Coordination Unit Director of the UN Humanitarian Aid Coordination Office (OCHA), presented alarming statistics that highlight the dire need for assistance in Ukraine.
According to Rajasingham, approximately 18 million people in Ukraine are currently in need of humanitarian aid, representing around 40 percent of the country’s population. In addition to this staggering number, he added that 10 million individuals have been displaced both internally and externally due to the ongoing conflict.
The gravity of the situation was further emphasized as Rajasingham disclosed that, based on the latest information, almost 10,000 civilians have lost their lives as a result of the conflict. However, he cautioned that these figures may be underestimated due to the increasing danger faced by humanitarian organizations on the ground. Shockingly, 14 aid workers have lost their lives since the beginning of the war, highlighting the risks associated with delivering assistance in the region.
Furthermore, Rajasingham highlighted another alarming trend: targeted attacks on healthcare facilities. Since the war began, the World Health Organization has recorded approximately 1,300 attacks on health facilities in Ukraine. Tragically, these attacks have resulted in the death of 111 healthcare workers and patients.
The situation in Ukraine is dire, with millions of people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The United Nations and its member countries are called upon to support the ongoing efforts and provide the necessary aid and resources to alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people. As the conflict persists, it is crucial to prioritize the protection of aid workers and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of health facilities, as they play a vital role in delivering life-saving assistance.
