UN Prohibits Attacks on Medical Facilities under International Humanitarian Law
UN Condemns Israeli Forces’ Request to Evacuate Gaza Hospital
In a recent development, Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, has criticized Israeli forces for their request to evacuate al-Awde Hospital in Gaza. The spokesperson made a written statement emphasizing that international humanitarian law prohibits attacks on medical facilities, personnel, and the wounded and sick.
Shamdasani stressed the importance of implementing the principle of monitoring and caring for the injured and sick without discrimination, among other responsibilities, as required by international humanitarian law. She expressed concern over Israel’s request for evacuation, stating that it could endanger the lives of patients and medical workers.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, shared their concerns regarding the situation on social media. They revealed that Israeli forces had initially given only two hours for the evacuation of al-Awde Hospital, but the decision was later postponed until 06:00 in the morning. MSF called attention to the urgency of the situation and urged for immediate action to ensure the safety of patients and medical staff.
Furthermore, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, joined the condemnation of the evacuation request. He appealed to Israel to reverse their decision, emphasizing the potential risks it poses to the lives of patients and healthcare workers.
