UN Urges Protection of Hospitals in Conflict Zones
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric Raises Concerns Over Developments in Gaza
During a recent daily press conference, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed deep concerns over the continued targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructures in Gaza. “As we have said many times before, civilians and civilian infrastructures must be protected,” Dujarric emphasized.
Dujarric also reiterated the UN’s opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians, adding that it has been their stance from the very beginning.
The priority in Gaza, according to Dujarric, is to achieve a ceasefire. While he did not specify the requested period for the ceasefire, he emphasized the need to allow sufficient time for completing humanitarian aid.
The recent images from Şifa Hospital were described by Dujarric as “very disturbing,” prompting a renewed call for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law. Despite the absence of UN staff at the hospital, Dujarric stated, “We are very worried about what we see.”
He went on to stress that hospitals, in accordance with international humanitarian law, are protected spaces and should not be turned into war zones. “Parties should not conflict in hospitals. This should not happen anywhere in the world. Period,” Dujarric said.
Dujarric further highlighted the need for additional fuel in Gaza to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid. Despite 91 aid trucks entering from Egypt, distribution was hindered due to a lack of fuel. “More fuel is needed. Restrictions on use also make the situation difficult,” Dujarric said, emphasizing the vital importance of fuel in supporting power plants, health facilities, clean water, and aid distribution.
In a separate announcement, Dujarric revealed that UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Catherine Russell had been involved in a traffic accident in Egypt while en route to Gaza. Although injured, Russell continued her visit to Gaza and was checked by a doctor. However, it was determined that she should end her visit to the region and could not proceed to Israel. Dujarric stated that Russell would return to the region after receiving treatment.
