UN Warns of Dangerous Situation in the Middle East

UN Security Council Convenes to Discuss US Attacks on Iraq and Syria

The UN Security Council met at the request of Russia to address the recent US airstrikes on Iraq and Syria. During the meeting, UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, expressed concern over the escalating tension in the region.

DiCarlo referenced UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s warning about the potential for increased tensions and miscalculations, emphasizing that the situation in the Middle East has involved multiple countries. She highlighted that there have been nearly daily incidents in the region since October 2023, with 165 attacks carried out on US facilities in Syria and Iraq.

Emphasizing the need for all parties to consider the humanitarian and economic consequences of a regional conflict, DiCarlo urged for a step back from escalating tensions. She cautioned, “The general situation in the Middle East remains very dangerous” and called for the implementation of a political roadmap for regional stability.

DiCarlo also noted that Secretary-General Guterres continues to engage with all parties in order to seek a sustainable political resolution and called on all council members to actively work towards preventing further escalation of tensions affecting regional peace and security.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it conducted airstrikes targeting the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated militia groups in Iraq and Syria. President Joe Biden announced that these strikes were in response to an attack on the US base called Tower 22, which resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers and over 40 injuries.

In response, the US administration stated that it would initiate multi-layered attacks over time, targeting Iran-backed groups in the region. The situation remains a focal point for international concern as efforts are made to reduce tensions and prevent further conflict.
