Turkmenistan Prepares for WTO Accession in Financial Services Sector

On January 30, 2025, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, organized a webinar focused on drafting a schedule of commitments for market access in financial services. This event was part of the joint UNDP project, “Partnering for SDG acceleration, Phase III”.

During the webinar, participants were given an overview of the multilateral rules governing international trade in services and discussed the regulation of financial services in Turkmenistan in light of current economic reforms. The goal was to prepare for upcoming negotiations on the terms of Turkmenistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the financial services sector. This included understanding how to incorporate existing and future national regulations into WTO documents.

Mr. Maxim Medvedkov, UNDP international expert, emphasized the strategic role of the financial system in economic growth and the importance of defining Turkmenistan’s national interests for market access in financial services as part of the WTO accession process.

The webinar brought together over 30 representatives from the Government of Turkmenistan, including various ministries and agencies such as the Mejlis (Parliament), the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Education, the State Customs Service, the Central Bank, and other key state institutions, along with representatives from the private sector.

As Turkmenistan prepares for WTO accession in the financial services sector, the collaboration between the UNDP and the government highlights the commitment to economic development and international trade integration.
