Unveiling the Identity of Muslihuddin Mustafa, Vefa Sultan
Muslihuddin Mustafa, also known as Sheikh Vefâ Zeyniyye, was a sufi and poet who founded the Vefâ Zeyniyye sect. He is famous for his association with the Vefa district in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Mustafa received his education in Konya during the time of the Karamanoğulları rule, and later in Edirne, the capital of the Ottomans, where he traveled with his father.
Although sources do not provide detailed information about his teachers or the period in which he lived, it is noted that he was well-versed in both the apparent and hidden knowledge, including fields such as music and astronomy. Mustafa received significant support from Fâtih Sultan Mehmed in Istanbul, who even had a double bath and mosque built in the neighborhood known as “Vefa” in his honor, and granted him the village of Kepim along with nearby land.
Muslihuddin Mustafa gained a great reputation among the Grand Vizier Karamânî Mehmed Pasha and other statesmen, who often sought his counsel and guidance. Upon his passing in 1491, he was laid to rest with the funeral prayer attended by II. Bayezid, and was buried in the mosque treasury built in his name.
Throughout his life, Muslihuddin Mustafa left a lasting impact on those around him, both spiritually and intellectually, and his legacy continues to be celebrated within the Sufi community.
