Upcoming Price Increase for Budapest Public Transport Effective 1 June

The latest decision of the Municipal Council in Budapest will result in an increase in the cost of public transport tickets starting from 1 June. However, the good news is that pass prices will remain unchanged. The Municipal Council has stated that they plan to use the extra income to carry out developments in the city.

According to the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), the price increases were deemed necessary due to the depreciation of the Hungarian forint and the need for certain developments in the public transport system. Despite the price change, it remains below the general inflation rate in Hungary. Interestingly, a single ticket in Budapest will now cost the same as in Debrecen, despite the latter having a smaller public transport system.

For commuters in Budapest, the pass prices will remain the same from 1 June. A monthly Budapest pass, allowing unlimited travel on the entire public transport system in the capital, will continue to cost HUF 8,950 (EUR 22.2). Additionally, commuters from the suburbs can choose the Pest County Pass or the Hungary Pass, both valid within Budapest’s administrative borders on almost all means of public transport.

Following the decision of the Municipal Council, several Budapest public transport ticket types will see an increase in price from 1 June. For example, a single ticket will cost HUF 500 (EUR 1.25), up from HUF 450, and a ticket purchased on the spot will rise to HUF 700 (EUR 1.75) from HUF 600.

The additional revenue generated from the price increases will be used to finance developments in the public transport system. Plans include extending night metro services, introducing new 24/7 services above ground, extending tram line 12 to Lehel Square, improving trolleybus line 81, and creating competitive public transport routes from outer districts to the city center with fast, reliable, and high-frequency bus lines.

All these developments are supported by surveys, polls, and professional background studies, according to BKK. This decision aims to make public transport in Budapest faster, more comfortable, and more reliable for residents and commuters alike.
