Update on Orto-Tokoy Reservoir HPP Construction

Construction of a new hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan continues
Construction of a new hydropower plant (HPP) owned by Chakan HPP JSC on the Orto-Tokoy reservoir in Kyrgyzstan is progressing smoothly, the company’s press service reported.
The plant, once completed, will have an installed capacity of 21 megawatts, with an average annual generation of 75 million kilowatt-hours. To support the construction project, a temporary town for workers and builders has been established, along with the construction of a concrete plant.
Various construction activities are currently underway as part of the project. These include ongoing concrete pouring and installation work on the tailrace channel’s retaining wall, completion of shoreline strengthening of Chu River, drilling of 460 meters for a tunnel as of March 10, and the construction of a road along the upper crest of the reservoir.
The hydropower plant construction project was approved by the Kyrgyz government on July 30, 2021. Furthermore, on March 24, 2023, Chakan HPP JSC signed a contract with China National Machinery Industry Corporation (CNMIC) for the construction of the HPP.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2026. With the progress being made, it is expected that the new hydropower plant will contribute significantly to Kyrgyzstan’s energy sector and help meet the country’s growing energy demands.
