US Attorneys General to Sue Firms Implementing Race-Based Quotas
Republican Attorney Generals Target Diversity Programs at US Companies
According to a report by the BBC, a group of Republican attorney generals in the United States has declared diversity programs that provide “race-based places” as unconstitutional. In an open letter, the Chief Prosecutors announced their intention to take legal action against companies that continue to implement such practices.
The statement emphasized that it is illegal to discriminate against individuals solely based on their skin color, even if done with good intentions. A total of 13 attorneys general, including Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, signed the open letter.
Attorney General Skrmetti stated that regardless of the motivation behind a company’s actions, people should not be treated differently because of their race. He emphasized the importance of finding ways to support individuals from all races and backgrounds without resorting to primitive racial discrimination.
To bolster their argument, the attorneys general pointed to a Supreme Court decision that ruled out the use of race as a factor in student selection at universities, including Harvard.
The open letter targets 100 major companies, including industry giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Intel, Netflix, Paypal, and Uber. If successful, the legal action could have significant implications for these companies and their diversity programs.
Experts have expressed differing opinions on the matter. Some argue that if these diversity programs are eliminated, it may lead to a backlash from the younger generation. On the other hand, there are those who contend that positive discrimination, such as these programs, exacerbates racism issues in the United States.
