Uzbek President Mirziyoyev meets with OSCE mission head ahead of elections
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan recently met with Douglas Wake, head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Election Observation Mission, to discuss preparations for the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections. The meeting, which took place today, included a detailed discussion on election readiness, as reported by the presidential press service.
During the meeting, both President Mirziyoyev and Wake expressed their satisfaction with Uzbekistan’s positive relationship and cooperation with the OSCE and its institutions, particularly the ODIHR. The ODIHR’s active involvement in assisting with election preparations was highly praised, noting the valuable contributions made by ODIHR experts in improving Uzbekistan’s national electoral system. The country has implemented numerous recommendations from the ODIHR into its legislation.
Douglas Wake also expressed his appreciation for the support provided to the ODIHR mission and commended Uzbekistan’s continuous efforts in democratic and socio-economic reforms, which are in alignment with the vision of a “New Uzbekistan.”
The upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan will be conducted under the newly revised Uzbek Constitution, which introduces a mixed electoral system designed to enhance the roles of parliament and local representative bodies. This change reflects the government’s commitment to further strengthening democratic processes in the country.
