Uzbekistan and Russia Reach Agreement on Cargo Transportation via Turkmenistan
Uzbekistan and Russia have reached an agreement on freight transportation through Turkmenistan and the Caspian Sea, aiming to enhance transport and logistics cooperation in the region. This decision was made during the first Transport Forum of member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on November 1.
During the forum, Ilhom Makhkamov, the Transport Minister of Uzbekistan, put forward several proposals to promote the development of transportation and logistics. These proposals include the establishment of alternative transport routes, standardization, and implementation of flexible tariffs. Makhkamov also suggested the construction of multimodal logistics centers along major transportation routes and at border areas. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of operating border control points around the clock and simplifying the visa issuance process.
At the forum, the Transport Minister of Uzbekistan, along with his counterparts from Russia and Kyrgyzstan, signed a memorandum of understanding. This memorandum aims to develop an international multimodal transport corridor that links Russia, the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Furthermore, another memorandum of understanding was signed during the forum for the creation and development of an international transport corridor connecting Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
These agreements signify a significant step towards strengthening regional cooperation and improving transport connectivity. The implementation of these transport corridors will facilitate smoother and more efficient freight transportation, benefiting the economies of the involved countries.
