Uzbekistan and Somalia Establish Diplomatic Relations
A historic moment occurred in New York on February 5th as Uzbekistan and Somalia officially established diplomatic relations by signing a Joint Communiqué. The document was signed by Ulugbek Lapasov, Uzbekistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Abukar Dahir Osman, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
Both countries expressed their mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation within various international organizations, including the United Nations and its specialized agencies. They also agreed to work towards identifying areas of cooperation in political, trade, economic, and cultural-humanitarian sectors.
This significant step towards cooperation is a part of Uzbekistan’s efforts to strengthen its ties with African nations. With the signing of this document, Somalia became the 157th country to establish diplomatic relations with Uzbekistan. Other recent additions to this list include Liberia as the 154th, Togo as the 155th, and the Bahamas as the 156th country to do so.
In 2024 alone, Uzbekistan has established diplomatic relations with a total of 12 countries across Africa, the Americas, and Europe. This demonstrates Uzbekistan’s commitment to fostering positive relationships and promoting international cooperation on a global scale.
