Uzbekistan Considers Preventing Crime Suspects from Exiting Country
Investigators, prosecutors, and judicial authorities are one step closer to being granted the power to restrict the right of accused individuals and suspects to leave the country. This development comes following the approval of a draft law in its first reading by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
The draft law, which is aimed at improving the system of coercive measures in criminal proceedings, was discussed during a session on Wednesday. Deputies highlighted the issue of individuals who have committed crimes but have not been placed in custody leaving the country to evade investigation, inquiry, or trial, thereby hindering the ability to restore victims’ rights and compensate for damages.
To address this issue, the draft law proposes amendments to certain legislative acts to establish a procedure for temporarily restricting the right to leave the country for suspects, accused individuals, or defendants who have not been placed in custody, but where there are sufficient grounds to believe they may flee without a valid reason.
In cases where there is a risk of individuals leaving the country to evade justice, investigators, interrogators, prosecutors, or courts may temporarily restrict their right to travel abroad. The deputies involved in the discussion emphasized that the adoption of this draft law is crucial for protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of victims and preventing harm to their legitimate rights and interests.
