Uzbekistan partners with FAO on 3-year project to enhance forest management and biodiversity

A meeting at the Embassy of Uzbekistan with FAO focuses on Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation

A recent meeting at the Embassy of Uzbekistan brought together Obidjon Kudratov, the First Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, and Viorel Gutu, the Deputy Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) regional representative for Europe and Central Asia.

During the dialogue, both parties highlighted the dynamic development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and FAO in addressing issues related to climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation. They expressed satisfaction with the increasing volume of projects being implemented through international climate finance and donors, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant.

The FAO representative commended Uzbekistan for its fundamental reforms in the field of ecology and climate change. He emphasized the crucial role of forestry in mitigating the effects of climate change, preserving biodiversity, regulating natural phenomena, and contributing to the restoration of nature and economic development.

The significant impact of the national project “Yashil Makon” on increasing green spaces in the Aral Sea region and promoting sustainable development was also acknowledged during the meeting.

An agreement was signed between Uzbekistan and FAO to implement the regional project “Improving biodiversity and sustainable forestry management,” aimed at further enhancing efforts in this direction. Over the next three years, the project will focus on strengthening forestry capacity, conducting research, attracting international experts, developing geographic information systems, and generating innovative ideas for restoring forest landscapes.

This project is set to be implemented not only in Uzbekistan but also in neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The collaborative efforts between Uzbekistan and FAO signify a commitment to combatting climate change and preserving biodiversity in the region.
