Uzbekistan Returns 98 Convicts to Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners, with 98 Uzbek citizens set to be transferred from Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan to serve their sentences. The draft law for this exchange has already been approved in the first reading by Kyrgyzstan’s Jogorku Kenesh (Supreme Council).

The draft law, titled “On the Ratification of the Agreement between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan on the Transfer of Persons Sentenced to Imprisonment for Further Serving Their Sentence,” was signed on July 18, 2024, in Tashkent. This agreement outlines the cooperation between the two countries in transferring convicted individuals to serve their sentences in their home country.

Deputy General Prosecutor Umutkan Konkubayeva stated that currently, there are 98 citizens of Uzbekistan serving sentences in Kyrgyzstan, while 42 Kyrgyz citizens are serving sentences in Uzbekistan. This prisoner exchange agreement aims to facilitate the repatriation of these individuals to serve their sentences closer to home.

The approval of this draft law marks a significant step in the bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, showcasing a commitment to cooperation and mutual understanding in the realm of law enforcement and justice.
