Uzbekistan to Increase Water Supply to Kazakhstan by 1 Billion Cubic Meters
In a recent development, Uzbekistan has committed to increasing its water supply to Kazakhstan by 1 billion cubic meters, with the total reaching 16 billion cubic meters by October 1 of this year. This decision was made during the 12th meeting of the Joint Working Group on Strengthening Bilateral Water Cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was reached between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources, Shavkat Khamraev, and Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov. It was highlighted that in the previous water management year, 15 billion cubic meters of water were delivered to Kazakhstan. This year, the volume is expected to increase by an additional 1 billion cubic meters.
Furthermore, Uzbekistan has also pledged to assist in ensuring a stable water supply through the Dostyk Canal during the upcoming 2025 irrigation season. This cooperation is essential for supporting agricultural activities in both countries.
In addition to increasing water supply, the two ministers have agreed to collaborate on joint repairs of interstate canals. This initiative aims to improve water distribution for farmers in Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region and Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region. By working together on infrastructure projects, both countries hope to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of their water management systems.
