Vein Clot Risks Peak in First 15 Days

The critical period for vein clots is the first 15 days

The Turkish Society of Interventional Radiology (TGRD) recently held its 19th Annual Meeting at the Antalya-Belek Titanic Congress Center from February 2-6, 2024. The meeting brought together over 650 participants and 26 international scientists to discuss and share the latest scientific developments and practices in interventional radiology. Among the topics covered at the conference was the issue of clotting, which has become a concern for many patients in recent years.

Prof. Dr. Levent Oğuzkurt, President of the Turkish Interventional Radiology Association (TGRD) and the Congress, emphasized that clots cause serious fears among citizens. He explained that vein clots can occur anywhere in the leg, arm, liver, or kidneys, and often result in symptoms such as swelling, sudden foot swelling, severe pain, and bruising.

Dr. Oğuzkurt clarified that the critical period for vein clots is the first 15 days. If intravenous intervention is performed with angiography within this time frame, there is a chance to completely destroy the clot and prevent it from traveling to the lungs. However, after the 15-day mark, the chances of successfully removing the clot decrease significantly.

He further explained that several factors can contribute to clotting tendencies, such as genetic predisposition, immobility, pregnancy, and certain diseases. Patients who experience clot formation may suffer from lifelong foot swelling and impaired quality of life if the condition is not addressed promptly.

Dr. Oğuzkurt emphasized the importance of early intervention and angiography treatment within the first 15 days to prevent long-term complications. He also highlighted the efforts of cardiovascular surgeons in treating these conditions and expanding treatment options for patients.

The insights shared at the 19th Annual Meeting underscore the significance of timely and effective intervention in managing vein clots and preventing long-term health complications. It is clear that raising awareness about the critical period for vein clot treatment is vital in improving patient outcomes and overall quality of life.
