Water Management Collaboration between Kazakhstan and Brazil: Advancing Hydrogeology Technology
Brazilian consulting company Water Services and Technologies has expanded its operations in Kazakhstan, offering hydrogeology and environmental services to support the country’s significant mining activity and water resources management.
CEO Nilson Guiguer and Kazakhstan Director Yernat Assenov shared insights into the company’s core activities, sustainability challenges, and collaborative efforts between Brazil and Kazakhstan. Since 2011, Water Services and Technologies has been serving clients such as KazMinerals and Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) by providing groundwater resource assessment, environmental impact analysis, and water management solutions.
The decision to expand into Kazakhstan was driven by factors such as water availability, regulatory environment, business opportunities, and the country’s strategic geographical location connecting Asia and Europe. The company’s primary focus during the first year in Kazakhstan was to establish a presence in the mining sector, given the sector’s demand for water management services.
Water Services and Technologies has initiated several ongoing hydrogeological projects with major mining companies in Kazakhstan, including ERG, Altyn Almas, and East Mining Company (EMCO). The company is also exploring expansion opportunities in Uzbekistan and Russia, aiming to leverage its expertise and strategic location in Kazakhstan.
The challenges in water resources management in Kazakhstan, as highlighted by Guiguer and Assenov, include groundwater depletion, salinization, data collection, and strategic planning. Efforts are being made to establish a centralized database for water resources to improve monitoring and decision-making processes.
In terms of the Brazil-Kazakhstan bilateral relationship, Guiguer emphasized the growth potential in sectors such as mining, oil and gas, agriculture, fertilizer, and technology. He suggested negotiating a bilateral tax agreement and streamlining the visa process to enhance business cooperation between the two countries.
