WHO Warns of Ongoing Spread of Covid-19
The World Health Organization’s technical lead for COVID-19, Maria Van Kerkhove, has revealed some alarming statistics regarding the true impact of the virus. According to Van Kerkhove, the circulation level of the disease is actually 19 times higher than what has been officially reported. This means that the actual number of cases could be much higher than what has been documented.
Van Kerkhove further emphasized the severity of the situation by stating that the data showing that 10 thousand people die monthly from Covid-19 was received from only 50 countries. This indicates that the global death toll from the virus could be significantly higher than what is currently being reported.
In addition to the high circulation level of the virus, Van Kerkhove also shared concerning information about the increase in hospitalizations and ICU admissions. She stated that there was a 42 percent increase in hospitalizations due to Covid-19 and a 62 percent increase in the number of patients admitted to intensive care in December compared to the previous month. These figures highlight the strain that the virus is putting on healthcare systems and the potential for a further increase in deaths if the situation is not brought under control.
