28 Miners Dead in Kazakhstan Mine Accident, Search and Rescue Continues for 18
A tragic incident unfolded in the Karagandı province of Kazakhstan, as a fire broke out in the “Kostenko” mine operated by the “Arselor Mittal Temirtau” mining company. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan, 28 miners have lost their lives, while efforts to locate and rescue 18 others are still ongoing.
The fire occurred during the nighttime in the 700-meter-deep mine. Out of the 252 workers present at the time, 206 were successfully evacuated. Regrettably, the remains of 22 miners have been discovered so far, leaving 24 workers still unaccounted for. Search and rescue teams are working tirelessly in hopes of finding them alive.
Reacting to the devastating news, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of Kazakhstan launched a preliminary investigation into the incident. Prompt action is necessary to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar disasters in the future.
President of Kazakhstan, Kasım Cömert Tokayev, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased miners. In an effort to prioritize the safety of workers, he ordered the government to terminate all investment cooperation with the “Arselor Mittal Temirtau” mining company.
