4th Century Mevlevi Lodge Restoration in Bursa Successfully Finished

Restoration of 400-Year-Old Mevlevi Lodge Completed in Bursa

After being left abandoned for centuries and replaced with water tanks, the historic Bursa Mevlevi Lodge has been brought back to its former glory. The lodge, founded by Cünûnî Ahmed Dede, an important figure in the Mevlevi order during the 17th century, has undergone extensive restoration.

Situated opposite Pınarbaşı Cemetery, the building consists of various sections including semahane (the whirling dervish hall), tomb, square-i sheriff (a courtyard), matbah-i sheriff (kitchen), dedegan cells, and selamlık (reception area). With its unique identity, the restored building has added value to the region. The ceiling decorations and wood carvings, especially in the semahane section, are particularly stunning. Additionally, the matbah-ı şerif section will serve as a museum to educate visitors about all aspects of Mevlevi culture.

Furthermore, the Dedegan cells and Selamlık section will collaborate with Bursa Uludağ University to offer specialized music and calligraphy lessons. This initiative aims to preserve and promote the Mevlevi culture.

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş expressed his excitement about the completion of the restoration project. He stated that the Bursa Mevlevi Lodge is a significant landmark that will transform the Hanlar Region Çarşıbaşı Urban Transformation Project. In conjunction with other historical sites such as Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi tombs, Tophane Square, Zindan Kapı, and Hisar region, it will create an island of history in Bursa.

Aktaş emphasized that the Mevlevi House will become a popular attraction both locally and nationally. With its weekly talk shows, whirling dervish performances, music and calligraphy lessons, the lodge will play an integral role in preserving and promoting the Mevlevi culture. It is expected to become a vibrant space with constant activity.

The restoration and furnishing works in the Mevlevi House have been completed, marking the end of the renovation process. The Bursa Mevlevi Lodge is now ready to open its doors as a cultural and educational site, welcoming visitors from both Bursa and beyond.
