Arab nations approve UN draft resolution on Sudan
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Other Arab Countries Welcome UN Decision on Ceasefire in Sudan
After months of deadly conflict in Sudan, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has taken a significant step towards peace by adopting a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan. In response to this decision, several Arab countries have welcomed the move and expressed their support for efforts to end the violence in Sudan.
Saudi Arabia, in a statement by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of all Sudanese parties complying with the UNSC decision to protect the country, its people, and the sanctity of Ramadan. The Saudi administration also called for adherence to the outcomes of the Jeddah talks aimed at serving the interests of the Sudanese population.
Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) welcomed the UNSC’s decision, stating that it would help resolve the crisis in Sudan and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict. The UAE reiterated its support for military de-escalation, ceasefire, and political dialogue as essential steps towards peace.
Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Yemen, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also expressed their approval of the UNSC decision, highlighting the need for dialogue, political solutions, and international support to end the violence in Sudan. The Rapid Support Forces (HDK) in Sudan also welcomed the call for a ceasefire during Ramadan and declared readiness for dialogue to ensure humanitarian goals are met.
The civil war in Sudan, which erupted due to disagreements between the army and the HDK over security reforms, has resulted in thousands of casualties and millions of internally displaced persons and refugees. The international community’s intervention through the UNSC resolution is seen as a crucial step towards ending the bloodshed and establishing lasting peace in the region.
As the world observes Ramadan, a month of peace and reflection, the hope is that all parties in Sudan will heed the call for a ceasefire and engage in constructive dialogue to pave the way for a comprehensive and sustainable agreement that prioritizes the well-being of the Sudanese people.
