Asif Ali Zardari Re-elected as President of Pakistan
In a recent presidential election held in Pakistan following the national and state assemblies elections on February 8, Asif Ali Zardari, the joint candidate of PPP and PML-N, has been elected President for the second time according to unofficial results. Zardari previously served as president between 2008 and 2013.
His main rival in the presidential election was Mahmud Achakzai, the candidate of the Sunni Alliance Council and leader of the Pakhtunkhwa National Awami Party (PKMAP). Achakzai was also supported by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI).
Asif Ali Zardari, who is the husband of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, was born in Karachi in 1955. He comes from an influential family and has a history in Pakistani politics.
In the elections held on February 8 for the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies, independent MPs supported by Imran Khan’s PTI emerged as the first party. PML-N, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, finished second. Following the elections, PML-N Chairman Shahbaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister for the second time by receiving 201 votes on March 3.
However, there have been allegations of vote stealing in many constituencies, with some political parties claiming that their votes were shifted to candidates of rival parties. The election results have sparked controversy and debate within the political landscape of Pakistan.
