Fresh Russian Attacks Kill at Least Nine in Ukraine, Kyiv Strikes Russian Oil Depot
On August 28, fresh Russian attacks in two Ukrainian regions resulted in the deaths of at least nine people, with Kyiv’s drones striking three Russian regions and setting an oil depot on fire in Russia’s Rostov region.
The violence escalated in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk, where ongoing fighting has claimed several lives as Russian troops advance towards the regional hub of Pokrovsk. Four people were killed and a house destroyed in Izmaylivka in the Kurakhove community, according to Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin. Additionally, two individuals lost their lives due to Russian shelling in Chasiv Yar, Bakhmut district, where clashes between Ukrainian forces and mercenaries from the Wagner Group occurred last year.
In Kharkiv, Russian forces launched a guided aerial bomb on Kupyansk, injuring 14 people, including three police officers, and causing damage to residential and municipal buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for Western leaders to allow Ukraine to use the weapons provided for long-range strikes against Russian targets.
Elsewhere, a Russian drone attack in Zaporizhzhya killed three people and wounded several others. In Dnipropetrovsk region, Kryviy Rih was targeted by a Russian missile strike that injured three people and caused damage to infrastructure and cars.
Russian officials and Telegram channels reported Ukrainian drone strikes on three regions of Russia, including an attack on a fuel depot in Russia’s Rostov region. Vasily Golubev, governor of Rostov, confirmed a fire at the oil depot and the downing of four drones by Russian air defense systems.
In response, suspected Ukrainian drones attacked fuel storage facilities in the Russian regions of Proletarsk and Kotelnich, as well as in the Kirov region. No casualties were reported in these incidents.
The Kursk region in Russia announced additional security measures following Ukrainian incursions into the area. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Su-25 aircraft in Kramatorsk, Donetsk. NATO members meeting in Brussels reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defenses, stating that increased support is crucial for Ukraine to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.
