Belgium Prime Minister De Croo Calls for Restraint and Compliance with International Law
Belgium Prime Minister Alexander De Croo emphasized the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and called for moderation in response to recent events in Israel and Palestine.
Speaking at the conference titled “Re-evaluating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on its 75th anniversary” at Ghent University, De Croo reaffirmed Belgium’s support for Israel’s right to defend its people, but also urged for an end to violence against civilians.
“Violence against civilians will have consequences,” De Croo stated, adding that extremist settlers in the West Bank would be barred from entering Belgium. He also announced plans to cooperate with the United States on imposing sanctions against individuals who undermine peace, security, and stability in the West Bank.
De Croo’s remarks come at a time when Belgium is preparing to take over the EU presidency in 2024. His recent visit to Israel and Palestine with his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez further underscored his commitment to addressing the conflict in the region.
During his visit, De Croo condemned the killing of civilians and the destruction of Gaza, calling it “unacceptable.” He also expressed concern over settler violence and the killing of innocent people in the West Bank. These statements were met with criticism from the Israeli administration.
As Belgium prepares to assume a leadership role within the EU, De Croo’s stance on the situation in Israel and Palestine signals a commitment to promoting peace, security, and adherence to international law.
