Biden Responds to Constitutional Court’s Ruling on the ‘Racial Element’ – Latest Global News Update

U.S. Supreme Court Bans Consideration of Race in University Applications
In a recent decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has banned the consideration of race in university applications as a means to provide diversity. The ruling, made by 6 out of 9 judges, determined that applications should be evaluated based on the personal experiences of the students instead.
This decision effectively prevents universities from engaging in positive discrimination based on race, a practice that leading institutions like Harvard have employed to ensure diversity among their student bodies.
Upon hearing the news, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his “great disappointment” with the Supreme Court’s decision. Speaking at a press conference in the White House, Biden argued that the Constitutional Court had disregarded the longstanding practice of considering race in university admissions. He further stated that the concept of affirmative action had been misunderstood.
Biden emphasized the importance of diversity in American universities, asserting that it is a key strength of the United States. According to the President, universities initially select qualified students from the applicant pool and then consider various factors, including race, when making final admission decisions. He stressed that diversity is essential for the country’s overall strength and the recognition of diverse talents.
However, Biden acknowledged that equal opportunity is not evenly distributed across the country, despite the presence of talented and hardworking students nationwide. He argued that the Supreme Court’s decision should not be the final word and called for the establishment of a regulatory framework and legislation that promote diversity and equal opportunity.
Biden also highlighted the ongoing presence of discrimination in the United States, stating that universities must take into account the challenges that students have overcome, including racial discrimination, in their admission criteria. He instructed the U.S. Department of Education to investigate steps that can be taken to increase diversity in schools.
Meanwhile, many Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, celebrated the decision. Trump described it as a “very big day for America” and praised the court’s ruling, stating that universities would now choose students based solely on their success.
As the debate surrounding affirmative action and diversity in university admissions continues, the question of how to achieve a fair and inclusive system remains at the forefront. The Supreme Court’s decision has generated mixed reactions, reflecting the complex nature of the issue and the contrasting perspectives on the role of race in university applications.
