Polish Ambassador to Moscow Raises Concerns Over Removal of Monument in Russia

The Polish Ambassador to Moscow, Krzysztof Krajewski, has expressed concerns over the removal of a monument dedicated to Polish victims of political repression in Russia. The monument, which was situated close to the city of Irkutsk, was taken down alongside a memorial for Lithuanian victims. Speaking on the matter, Ambassador Krajewski stressed that the Polish and Lithuanian monuments were “very valuable and important” to them.

He added that both monuments were erected by the local authorities and financed by the respective communities, and there was no basis to remove them. In a note handed to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Polish Embassy demanded answers as to why the monuments were taken down and where they were taken.

Tensions between Poland and Russia have already been strained, with the latter approaching a Polish Border Protection aircraft patrolling the Black Sea with a SU-34 fighter jet, leading to the exchange of notes of protest. Furthermore, other disputes between the two nations include the seizure of a high school building affiliated with the Russian Embassy by the Warsaw Municipality.
