Authorities in Chile have reported that the number of casualties from the devastating forest fires in the central and southern parts of the country has risen to 132. The fires have also destroyed approximately 43 thousand hectares of land and 15 thousand homes.
Governor Rodrigo Mundaca of Valparaiso City stated in a press conference that the fires were started deliberately, adding to the tragedy of the situation. Despite ongoing efforts to control the fires, the destruction caused by the blazes is extensive.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a state of emergency (OHAL) in response to the fires, directing all available resources to the central and southern regions. The fires, which have affected multiple areas simultaneously, have quickly spread to settlements, exacerbating the crisis.
