Chinese Fighter Jet’s Aggressive Move on US Reconnaissance Aircraft in Pacific Triggers Breaking News

US Aircraft Experiences Aggressive Maneuver from Chinese Fighter Jet
On May 26, 2023, a J-16 fighter pilot from the People’s Republic of China performed an unduly aggressive maneuver during reconnaissance activity against a US Air Force RC-135 aircraft, according to a written statement from INDO-PACOM. The Chinese pilot flew in front of the RC-135, causing the US plane to be stuck in tail turbulence.
Despite the incident, the US RC-135 aircraft carried out safe and routine operations in international airspace over the South China Sea in accordance with international law.
The United States remains committed to flying, floating, and operating safely and responsibly wherever international law allows. INDO-PACOM expects all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law.
This incident highlights the need for continued communication and cooperation between nations in the region to avoid dangerous and unnecessary escalation. The US government will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action as needed to ensure the safety of its military personnel and assets.
