Armed Attack on Church Before Sunday Service in the U.S.
A heavily armed attacker opened fire just before the Sunday service was set to begin at the Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. The church is located approximately 10 kilometers from the city center of Houston. In a statement released by the Houston Police Department, it was confirmed that the incident was ongoing and they urged people to stay away from the area.
Shortly after the incident, Lakewood Church shared a message on their social media account, confirming the gunshots and stating that police units were present at the scene.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the possible attacker was shot by the police and the church was subsequently searched. An eyewitness who was waiting for the service to commence reported that they heard the gunshots.
It is noted that around 45 thousand people attend Sunday services at Lakewood Church on a weekly basis, according to data from the Hartford Institute of Religious Studies, making it the 3rd largest church in the country in terms of attendance. This is a developing story and authorities are currently investigating the incident.
