The Urgent Situation of Maternal Health in Gaza
The Palestinian Red Crescent has recently shed light on the dire situation faced by pregnant women in the Gaza Strip. A recording of a phone call between medical teams and the family of a pregnant woman who was unable to reach the hospital in time to give birth has been shared on social media, highlighting the challenges faced by women in accessing proper healthcare in the region.
According to the audio recordings, doctors from the Palestinian Red Crescent have been trying to assist families by providing guidance to facilitate safe births at home, as many women in besieged areas are unable to reach hospitals due to restrictions imposed by Israeli forces.
During an information meeting held by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Palestine Representative Dominic Allen, it was revealed that approximately 18 thousand births have taken place in Gaza in the last 100 days. However, UNFPA has been unable to provide sufficient supplies, and the situation in hospitals is described as very dire. With approximately 5,500 women expected to give birth in the coming months, the lack of access to essential resources and healthcare poses a significant risk to the lives of both mothers and babies.
The UNFPA announced that 45 thousand pregnant and 68 thousand breastfeeding women in Gaza are at risk of anemia, bleeding, and even death. The Ministry of Health in Gaza has also raised concerns about the health of pregnant women in centers for the displaced, as basic needs are not being met, leading to malnutrition and other health issues.
The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis, and urgent intervention is needed to ensure the safety and well-being of pregnant women and their unborn children. The international community must come together to address the healthcare needs of women in Gaza and ensure that they have access to safe and proper maternal care.
