Energy Ministry’s Loan Debt Soars to $1.5 Billion

Bishkek – On January 14th, 2025, during a meeting of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Subsoil Use and Industrial Policy of Parliament, Deputy Zhenishbek Toktorbaev raised concerns about the Ministry of Energy’s increasing debt. The Deputy inquired whether the Ministry would cease taking on additional loans, as the current debt stands at $1.5 billion.

In response to the inquiry, Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev stated that it was necessary to continue taking loans, particularly interest-free ones with long terms. He further mentioned that he would be presenting a $500 million loan proposal to Parliament for the construction of the Kambar-Ata 1 hydropower station.
