Expert on CNN TURK discusses Malatya earthquake as aftershock or forerunner

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Battalgazi district of Malatya, causing panic in the region. The earthquake was also felt in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa provinces. This event has left many wondering whether it was a foreshock or an aftershock.

During a live broadcast on CNN TÜRK, Earthquake Expert Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy provided important insights into the situation. He explained that earthquakes over 4 magnitude in Malatya and its surrounding areas are a cause for concern, and those above 5 magnitude create 30 times more shaking than a 4 magnitude earthquake. Since the earthquake occurred on the Eastern Anatolian fault line, Ersoy concluded that it was likely an aftershock.

Ersoy also highlighted the need for caution, as aftershocks of smaller magnitudes could continue to occur. He advised people to stay away from damaged buildings as they could collapse even in the event of a smaller earthquake.

The region of Malatya has a history of seismic activity, and it is important for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the ongoing risk of tremors in the area.

The people of Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, and Şanlıurfa are advised to stay informed about safety measures and heed the advice of experts to minimize the impact of potential earthquakes in the future.
