Exploring the Link Between Economic Development, Peace, and Neutrality at WTO Headquarters Orient
The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan in Geneva, in collaboration with the Interpeace Building platform, recently hosted an event at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters titled “Building Resilience through Trade: Engagement for Sustainable Peace”. The event, held on February 17th, gathered high-ranking representatives from international organizations, media outlets, and the private sector to discuss the important theme of the interconnections between economic development, sustainable peace, and the principles of neutrality.
The Director-General of the WTO, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, sent a video message to the participants of the event, as reported by the Turkmen diplomatic mission. Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Salah Ahmed Jama, highlighted in his speech the significance of strategic investments and sustainable business practices in enhancing stability and trust in post-conflict zones.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan, Vepa Hajiyev, served as the main speaker at the event, where he underscored that the UN General Assembly had declared 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust at Turkmenistan’s initiative. He emphasized Turkmenistan’s commitment to peaceful cooperation, economic integration, and sustainable development, especially as the country celebrates the 30th anniversary of its neutrality. Turkmenistan’s experience demonstrates that neutrality fosters favorable conditions for international partnership and sustainable trade, rather than isolation.
Throughout the event, representatives from the International Trade Center (ITC), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and prominent private companies explored practical steps to increase business engagement in peacekeeping initiatives and trade and economic cooperation. The event provided a valuable platform for exchanging views, sharing best practices, and developing strategies, allowing participants from various sectors to discuss mechanisms for enhancing resilience and involving businesses in promoting peace and stability.
In its 30th year of neutrality, Turkmenistan continues to advocate for peace, trust, and mutually beneficial economic cooperation on the global stage, showcasing neutrality as a potent tool for advancing sustainable development.
