Finland Completes Formal Integration into NATO’s Military Wing
Finland’s formal integration process into NATO’s military wing has been completed, according to the joint declaration signed by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and NATO officials. The integration process between the Finnish Defense Forces and NATO military structures has progressed very quickly, thanks to close cooperation and military interoperability with NATO for nearly 30 years, Niinistö said at the signing ceremony.
Niinistö also emphasized that Finland’s full integration into the NATO structure will take time, but the country is committed to fulfilling its obligations and commitments as an allied member. NATO has gained an ally with Finland, which puts great importance on its membership in the alliance, he added.
Niinistö, highlighting its membership in Sweden, said that Finland’s membership would not be complete without Sweden’s membership, which is extremely important for them. Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership on May 18, 2022, following the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. Finland became the 31st member of NATO on April 4, while Turkey and Hungary have not yet received approval for Sweden’s membership.
