French Defense Chief Strengthens Ties with Armenia through Defense Deals
Kyiv, Ukraine – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen led a delegation of foreign leaders to Kyiv on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The visit was aimed at showing solidarity with Ukraine and condemning Russia’s aggression.
Von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv along with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. The leaders traveled to the Ukrainian capital by train from Poland.
The visit comes at a time when Russia has made significant gains in occupied Ukrainian territory, prompting concerns from Ukrainian officials about the need for continued international support. The United States and European Union recently imposed new rounds of sanctions on Russia, but Ukrainian officials are urging the international community to avoid cutting off support or empathy.
The leaders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Zelenskiy, who has been vocal in calling for assistance from the United States and other allies, warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine would have far-reaching consequences for the region.
The visit also highlighted the continued resilience of the Ukrainian people, who have been fighting Russian forces since the invasion began in 2022. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with Ukraine’s General Staff reporting that Russia has suffered over 400,000 troop casualties since the start of the invasion.
Despite the challenges, the leaders expressed their commitment to standing with Ukraine until it is free from Russian aggression. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of defending Ukraine and maintaining peace in Europe. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated the alliance’s support for Ukraine and urged continued efforts to resist Russian dominance.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the international community faces a critical test of unity and resolve in the face of Russian aggression.
