Özcan’s political journey began in the late 1990s when he joined the Democratic Left Party and successfully secured a seat in the Bolu Municipal Council during the 1999 local elections. However, he later decided to join the Republican People’s Party (CHP) before the 2004 local elections. This marked a significant turning point in his political affiliation.
In the 2011 Turkish general elections, Tanju Özcan became a Bolu deputy from the CHP, serving in the Turkish Grand National Assembly XXIV. He was appointed as a Clerk member of the Term Presidency Council. Subsequently, he was re-elected as a CHP Bolu deputy in both the June 2015 and November 2015 Turkish general elections.
After fulfilling three terms as a Member of Parliament, Özcan made his debut as the CHP’s Bolu mayoral candidate in the 2009 local elections. Despite his efforts, he was not elected at the time. However, he did not give up on his political aspirations and continued serving the public as a member of the municipal council and as the manager of Boluspor.
