Hungarian Government Seeks Cooperation with Democratic Administration, Says Minister
The Hungarian government is making efforts to collaborate with the current Democratic administration in a pragmatic and allied manner, according to Gergely Gulyás, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. In a speech delivered in Washington D.C., Gulyás emphasized the importance of maintaining strong Hungarian-American relations. Despite the divisions within American politics, he highlighted the friendly stance of Republican Party politicians towards Hungary and their belief that Hungary’s successful conservative governance can serve as a positive example.
Gulyás acknowledged that any potential political change in the United States would influence Hungarian-American relations. He expressed optimism about the potential for closer ties with a conservative US administration. However, he stressed the need to respect the views of the American electorate and affirmed Hungary’s commitment to working with any government in place, albeit perhaps with varying degrees of success.
The Minister also commented on the cultural and values debates, noting that the Republican Party in the United States aligns more closely with Hungary on issues such as gender, family policy, and prioritizing national interests.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Gulyás stated that there are differing opinions within the Republican Party, but the majority view supports a ceasefire and early peace talks. He highlighted Donald Trump, the current leading Republican presidential candidate, as someone who shares this perspective.
On the indictments against Donald Trump, Gulyás acknowledged the novelty of using criminal law against a former president and popular presidential candidate. However, he emphasized Hungary’s commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, while expressing concern about the political motivations and timing of these procedures.
During his visit to the US capital, Gulyás met with Republican senators, representatives, and heads of analytical institutions. The purpose of these meetings was to foster stronger bilateral relations between Hungary and the United States.
Hungarian-American relations are undoubtedly significant for both countries, and it remains to be seen how the future political landscape in the United States will impact this important alliance.
