Hungary Stands Against Becoming a ‘Battery-Plant Colony’
The green party in Hungary has launched a referendum on the government decree on priority investments, with hopes of protecting the country from becoming a “battery-plant colony”. An official of the party stated that if the referendum is successful, Hungary will be safeguarded against the sale of important locations such as Lake Balaton and Lake Ferto to “Fidesz oligarchs”.
In order for the referendum to take place, 200,000 signatures must be collected within four months. Antal Csárdi, the green party’s deputy group leader, emphasized the importance of this initiative in preventing the bypassing of existing legislation that restricts certain types of investments.
The decree on priority investments has been criticized for favoring projects that benefit members of the ruling Fidesz party, rather than serving the best interests of the country. The green party’s efforts to challenge this decree highlight their commitment to preserving Hungary’s natural resources and preventing exploitation by those in power.
As the Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of allowing the referendum on priority investments to proceed, the green party is optimistic about the potential impact of this initiative. By raising awareness and gathering support, they hope to secure a better future for Hungary and its citizens, free from the threat of becoming a mere “battery-plant colony”.
