The population of Spain is projected to reach 48,592,909 by the end of 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This increase is largely attributed to a rise in the number of immigrants, resulting in a total increase of 507,548 compared to the previous year. For the first time, the country has surpassed 48 million in population, with over 6 million immigrants now registered in Spain.
As of January 1, 2024, there are 42,101,407 Spanish citizens and 6,491,502 immigrants residing in the country. Comparatively, in 2000, there were 1,572,013 registered immigrants in Spain, a number which grew to 5,252,473 in 2010 and 5,402,702 in 2020.
Among the immigrant population, Moroccans hold the largest share with over 885,000 individuals, followed by Romanians (620,000), Colombians (320,000), British (290,000), and Italians (275,000). The number of registered Turkish immigrants in Spain is approximately 6,000.
