India surpasses China in population becoming the most populous country in the world, according to estimates by the United Nations (UN). This marks a historical turning point for the world’s two most populous nations, as they will diverge in terms of population growth. While China’s population declined for the first time in 2020 and entered the absolute decline process, India’s population, which has exceeded 1.4 billion this year, is expected to continue to grow until 2064. The UN analysis reported that India’s population reached 1.4 billion in 2021, catching up and exceeding China’s population, which had a decreasing trend after reaching its peak of 1.4 billion last year. The different population planning approaches of China and India have revealed different development directions over the years. While China implemented a one-child policy that controlled population growth, India pursued a more lenient approach. While China conducted its 10-year census in 2020, India postponed its planned 10-year census to 2024 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The figures for India are therefore based on projections and estimates rather than official data.
