Indigenous Canadians File Lawsuit Claiming Medical Experiments Without Consent
A class action lawsuit has been filed by Indigenous Canadians, alleging that doctors conducted medical experiments on them without their consent. One of the plaintiffs, Andrea Paul, stated in her claim that she and 60 other members of the Pictou Landing First Nation participated in a medical research project led by the Healthy Hearts and Minds Alliance of Canada. However, after the initial test was conducted, hospital staff held them for a second test and refused to share the results with them.
The statement of claim outlined how the plaintiffs were subjected to MRI scans without their knowledge or consent, revealing private information about their bodies. They felt targeted solely because of their ethnic identity, as detailed by members of the local community in the claim.
The lawsuit names radiologists Robert Miller and Sharon Clarke as defendants, who conducted the tests without proper consent from the participants. It was revealed that the test results were used for a larger research project titled “Findings of Liver Disease in an Atlantic Canadian First Nations Population,” further complicating the breach of trust.
The claim also highlighted the deep-seated mistrust that Indigenous peoples have towards the healthcare system, citing mistreatment and abuse as reasons for their reluctance to participate in health research or seek treatment from non-Indigenous providers.
