Iran seeks to normalize and strengthen ties with Egypt and Morocco

Iran Prioritizes Improving Relations with Neighboring and Muslim Countries
Tehran, Iran – In a meeting with representatives of Islamic countries on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed the Iranian government’s commitment to strengthening ties with neighboring and Muslim nations. According to the official Iranian news agency IRNA, Araghchi emphasized that this is the government’s top priority.
Araghchi expressed satisfaction with the recent normalization of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He stated, “Iran welcomes the development and normalization of relations with other countries in the region and the Islamic world, including the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Muslim brother country of Morocco.”
The diplomatic relations between Iran and Egypt were severed in 1979 following Egypt’s decision to grant asylum to Iran’s ousted leader, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Additionally, Egypt signed the Camp David Peace Agreement with Israel, further straining the relationship. Since then, the two countries have generally maintained low levels of engagement.
Similarly, Morocco cut off diplomatic ties with Lebanon in 2018 by closing its embassy in Tehran. This move was due to concerns regarding the link between the Iran-backed Hezbollah organization and the “separatist” Polisario Front, which Morocco perceived as a threat to its security.
Highlighting the importance of unity among Islamic nations, Araghchi warned of comprehensive plans by external forces to divide these countries. He noted that they particularly exploit crisis situations such as the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Addressing this concern, Araghchi emphasized the need for Islamic countries to unite against common threats and challenges.
In a significant breakthrough, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to normalize relations after seven years of strained ties. The two countries reached an agreement to reopen their embassies, resume flights, and ease visa restrictions. This positive step towards reconciliation is expected to foster greater stability and cooperation in the region.
Iran’s commitment to enhancing ties with neighboring and Muslim countries reflects its desire for stronger regional harmony and mutual understanding. The government’s proactive approach in normalizing relations and engaging in dialogue sets a positive precedent for future diplomatic endeavors.
