Iran Protests Russian Support for UAE’s Claims on Islands in the Persian Gulf
In a recent statement by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran has expressed its protest to the Russian Charge d’Affaires for supporting the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) claims over three islands in the Persian Gulf. The Russian diplomat has assured that Iran’s objections will be conveyed to Moscow at the earliest.
The dispute over the sovereignty of the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa has been a longstanding issue between Iran and the UAE. These islands hold strategic importance due to their proximity to the vital Strait of Hormuz and the potential for oil reserves in the region.
Historically, these islands were under British occupation until 1971, when control was transferred to the UAE after Britain withdrew. However, Iran quickly took control of the islands, leading to a dispute over their ownership. Iran asserts its rights over the islands by stating that they were temporarily occupied by the British in 1903 and returned in 1971, therefore discrediting the UAE’s claims.
The UAE, on the other hand, is seeking support from Arab countries and international organizations to strengthen its position on the islands’ sovereignty issue.
Furthermore, Russia’s public support for the UAE’s claims has sparked tensions between Iran and Russia. Iran had previously summoned China’s Ambassador to Tehran after China showed support for the UAE’s position during the China Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit.
In response to these developments, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that Iran’s sovereignty over the islands in question is non-negotiable. Iran also highlighted the need for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to resolve the dispute.
Given the growing tension over the islands’ dispute, it remains to be seen how Iran, the UAE, and their respective international allies will navigate this complex geopolitical issue in the future.
