Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Faces Possible Dismissal – Breaking News

Israel’s Supreme Court to Consider Petition Seeking Removal of Prime Minister Netanyahu
Israel’s Supreme Court has agreed to hold a hearing to discuss a petition requesting the dismissal of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The petition, filed by a group of activists known as the “Democratic Trench,” alleges that Netanyahu violated the conflict of interest agreement he signed with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2020.
The conflict of interest agreement prohibits the prime minister from interfering in legislative matters that could impact ongoing corruption cases against him. However, Netanyahu has made statements indicating his intention to be involved in controversial judicial regulations. As a result, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara deemed the prime minister’s statements and interventions in legislation as illegal and in violation of the conflict of interest agreement.
The petition will be reviewed by a panel of judges, led by Judge Ruth Ronnen. The court has not yet determined when the delegation will meet to discuss the petition.
The recent announcement of a “judicial reform” by Israeli Minister of Justice Yariv Levin has further highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding the issue. The reform aims to limit the powers of the Supreme Court and give the government a stronger say in judicial appointments. This has faced significant opposition from political and social groups, who view it as a threat to democracy.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s corruption case remains pending before the Israeli Central Court in Jerusalem. The Attorney General’s Office has accused him of bribery, corruption, and abuse of power in 2019. According to Israeli law, the prime minister is not required to resign unless formally charged by the Supreme Court. However, this situation has resulted in five consecutive elections in Israel over the past four years.
Netanyahu, who leads what is described as the “most right-wing government” in Israeli history, returned to power following the recent elections in 2022. The ongoing legal challenges and calls for his removal continue to create a significant political and legal controversy within the country.
