Jujube Fruit: The Delicious and Nutritious Turkish Delight
In the beautiful province of Mersin, Turkey, a unique fruit called “jujube” is taking the gardening scene by storm. Known as the “Chinese persimmon” in the region, jujube is not only an exquisite addition to any garden, but it also offers a myriad of health benefits.
One of the primary reasons why jujube is planted as a hedge plant, particularly around the edges of gardens in Mersin, is due to its thorny branches. These branches act as a natural barrier, keeping wild animals at bay and ensuring the safety of the garden’s produce. But that’s not all; the fruits of the jujube tree are considered a source of healing.
What makes jujube truly special is its delectable taste, which is a heavenly blend of apple and pear flavors. But the goodness doesn’t stop there. This fruit is known to strengthen bones and help prevent weight gain. Its consumption also enhances blood circulation and alleviates insomnia. With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that jujube has become a source of income for many local producers.
According to some producers, a 4-5-year-old jujube tree can yield an impressive amount of fruit, averaging around 50-60 kilograms. With the current market rate of 40-50 TL per kilogram, this translates to additional income for the growers. The fruit’s popularity is further bolstered by its delicious taste, as citizens who have had the pleasure of trying it can attest.
Yunus Söner, a retiree from Erdemli district, is one of those who have embraced jujube farming. He shares his experience, saying, “We planted jujube trees as hedges in our gardens because they were thorny. Now they have started to yield and have become valuable. They have many health benefits, from boosting the immune system to combating cholesterol, constipation, and obesity. We have more than 10 trees.” Söner further comments on the current season, noting the good yield and quality of the jujube crop. With prices ranging between 40-50 TL, his trees are proving to be a profitable venture.
Jujube fruit is undoubtedly a hidden gem in the world of produce, offering both taste and remarkable health benefits. As it continues to gain recognition in Turkey, more people are discovering the joys and advantages of cultivating this extraordinary fruit. So, why not join the jujube craze and indulge in this natural Turkish delight?
