Kazakhstan Rises in Speedtest Global Index Ranking

Kazakhstan Climbs 23 Places on Global Internet Speed Rankings

According to Ookla Research, Kazakhstan has made significant progress in its internet speed rankings, moving up 23 places on the Speedtest Global Index from 95th in December 2022 to 72nd in December 2023. This improvement has put Kazakhstan ahead of its neighboring Central Asian countries.

The country’s mobile download speeds have seen a remarkable 61% increase since late 2022, reaching 35.07 megabits per second (Mbps) in December 2023 from 21.29 Mbps in December 2022. Almaty, in particular, has outperformed other cities in Kazakhstan and neighboring countries in terms of 4G median download speeds.

Almaty reported a 4G median download speed of 32.32 Mbps in the fourth quarter of 2023, surpassing even the capital city of Astana. Both cities demonstrated faster 4G speeds compared to the neighboring capital cities of the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Kazakhstan is actively working towards leveraging 5G technology to support its digital transformation strategy and bridge the digital divide. Companies like Kcell and Tele2 are accelerating their 5G rollout, with ambitious deployment targets set by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry.

The country’s regulatory framework and government initiatives play a crucial role in driving Kazakhstan’s digital transformation. Strategic regulatory policies, collaboration between stakeholders, and initiatives like Digital Kazakhstan are being implemented to promote digital infrastructure and ensure widespread access to telecommunications services.

In the global ranking, Kazakhstan surpasses neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan (95th place), the Kyrgyz Republic (100th place), and Tajikistan (141st place). With continued investments in digital infrastructure and technology, Kazakhstan is on track to further enhance its position in the global internet speed rankings.
