Kyrgyzstan Implements Temporary Ban on Polyethylene Bag Imports
The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has taken a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability by initiating a temporary ban on the import of polyethylene bags to the country. This draft resolution, developed by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, has been sent for discussion to various government agencies and departments.
According to the initiators of this ban, polyethylene materials have a detrimental impact on ecological systems at various levels, including chemical, biological, and ecosystem levels. The issue of banning disposable polymer products aligns with the global agenda for sustainable development and is a measure approved by the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
Polyethylene, a polymer material derived from oil or natural gas, poses challenges to the environment due to its resistance to biodegradation. In the Kyrgyz Republic, the production and import of polyethylene bags have raised concerns about the growing plastic waste and its adverse effects on the planet.
To address these concerns, President Sadyr Japarov signed a law prohibiting the production, sale, and distribution of bags made of polymer film and plastic products starting from January 1, 2027. However, the Parliament has proposed reconsidering this ban, citing challenges in providing sufficient alternative packaging options and processing capacity in the country.
While paper, cardboard, wood, glass, metal, and textiles can serve as viable alternatives to plastic packaging, the transition requires activating relevant industries. The government is urged to carefully assess the implications of the ban on plastic bags and explore sustainable solutions that balance environmental protection with practical considerations such as food safety and market readiness.
As Kyrgyzstan navigates towards a greener future, finding a balance between environmental conservation and practical solutions will be key in addressing the impact of plastic waste on the country’s ecosystems and communities.
