Mangystau Region Tackles Key Issues and Unveils Growth Plans

Mangystau Governor Outlines Measures to Address Region’s Challenges

Nurlan Nogayev, the akim (governor) of the Mangystau Region, recently discussed the pressing issues of the region and the corresponding measures to address them in a Nov. 27 briefing, reported the press service of the akimat (governor’s office).

One of the key challenges facing the Mangystau Atomic Energy Complex (MAEC) is the shallowing of the Caspian Sea, which necessitates deepening existing water intake canals, posing a risk of water supply restrictions. To address this issue, plans include enhancing and deepening the MAEC’s water intake canals and constructing a water-receiving pipeline.

In addition, plans are in place for the modernization of MAEC, with projections for an additional 130 megawatts at each thermal power plant. The necessary infrastructure is in place, with nearly 200 billion tenge ($434 million) required to modernize and implement these projects.

Water supply challenges and infrastructure overhaul are also key focus areas, with the modernization of engineering networks and the planning of six water desalination projects to cope with water shortages.

Addressing natural gas supply is another aspect of the region’s development plan, with the recent launch of the second line of the Beineu-Zhanaozen main gas pipeline, and the construction of an underground high-pressure gas pipeline to serve new neighborhoods.

The region has also seen significant investments in various sectors over the last five years, totaling over three trillion tenge ($8 million). Initiatives to fortify food security and bolster industrial and export potential are underway, including the construction of a green hydrogen production plant. The aim is to yield a multiplicative effect on the region’s socio-economic development.

The region is also working to improve its public transport system, introducing a new fleet of buses with a dispatch system for route tracking and video surveillance. The introduction of methane gas stations aligns with environmental goals, contributing to a reduction in harmful emissions.

The ongoing efforts to enhance the tourism sector in the region have resulted in an influx of 180,000 tourists over the past six months. Plans are in place to implement various tourism projects totaling 100 billion tenge ($217 million) by 2025 to further boost tourism in the region.

Nogayev’s briefing outlined a comprehensive strategy to address the challenges and drive the economic and social development of the Mangystau Region in the coming years.
