Milatovic becomes the eighth president of Montenegro

According to the exit polls shared by the independent Monitoring and Research Center (CeMI), which monitors the elections in the country, 98 percent of the votes were counted in the second round of the election, the first of which was held on 19 March. Milatovic was elected the 8th president of the country with 60 percent of the votes.

Milatovic’s rival, Milo Djukanovic, the current President of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS), received 40 of the votes.

CeMI announced that the voter turnout was 70.5 percent.

Supported by the Serbs in the country, 37-year-old Milatovic completed his master’s degree at Oxford University after graduating from the Department of Economics at the University of Montenegro.

President Djukanovic, in a statement to the press, said, “The presidential election is over, the result is clear. I congratulate Jakov Milatovic for the votes he received. I hope he will be a successful president because his success means that Montenegro will be a successful country as well. ‘ he said.

Djukanovic thanked the voters who voted for him and expressed his satisfaction that the election went smoothly and in a democratic environment.

Milatovic received 28.9 percent of the votes in the first round.

Djukanovic received 35.3 percent of the votes in the first round of the presidential election held on March 19, while Milatovic received 28.9 percent of the votes, and the election was left to the second round as none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the votes.

Montenegro State Electoral Institute (DİK) announced that the turnout rate in the first round was 63.1 percent.

In Montenegro, the president is elected every five years.

Momir Bulatovic won the first presidential election in Montenegro in 1990. Bulatovic was also the winner of the second election in 1992. Milo Djukanovic won the 1997 presidential election.

Former President Filip Vujanovic was victorious in the 2003, 2008 and 2013 elections in Montenegro.

Current President Djukanovic won the 2018 election.

In Montenegro, the president is elected every five years.
